2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a more defined vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full content from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all excited to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Concept
Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that change every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to additional details as development progresses.
