Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
