As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
